Is AliExpress legit?

Yes. AliExpress is a legitimate retail marketplace owned by Alibaba Group, one of the largest e-commerce companies in the world, and it has been selling internationally since 2010. It is not a scam site, and it is not going to take your money and vanish.

The nuance that trips people up is that AliExpress is a marketplace, not a shop. Nobody at AliExpress inspects the products. Thousands of independent sellers list their own items, set their own prices, and pack their own parcels. So the honest question is not "is AliExpress legit" but "is this particular seller any good" — and that you can check in about thirty seconds.

How to read a seller in 30 seconds

1

Check the store rating, not the product rating. Anything at 95% positive or above over a few thousand orders is a seller who handles problems properly. Below 90%, move on.

2

Sort reviews by "with photos". Buyer photos are the single most useful thing on the page. They show what actually arrives, not what the studio shot promised.

3

Read the one and two star reviews first. If the complaints are about slow delivery, that is normal. If they are about the item being a different size, colour or material than listed, believe them.

Is AliExpress safe to buy from?

Your money is safe. Your expectations are what need managing. AliExpress holds your payment in escrow and does not release it to the seller until you confirm delivery or the buyer protection window closes. If the parcel never arrives, or arrives significantly different from the description, you open a dispute and get refunded.

RiskHow real it is
Losing your money entirelyLow. Escrow plus buyer protection covers non-delivery and misdescription.
Card details being stolenLow. Payment is processed by AliExpress, not by individual sellers.
Item is lower quality than the photosHigh. This is the actual risk, and buyer photos are your defence.
Counterfeit branded goodsHigh in branded categories. Avoid them entirely.
Long, silent deliveryVery likely, and normal. It is not evidence of a scam.

The one rule that matters

Never let the buyer protection clock run out. It is the only leverage you have. If the deadline is approaching and the parcel has not arrived, open a dispute first and close it later if the item turns up. You can always cancel a dispute; you cannot reopen an expired one.

What is AliExpress?

AliExpress is an online marketplace where mostly Chinese sellers list products directly to international buyers, cutting out the importers and retailers who would normally sit in between. That is why a phone case is two dollars instead of fifteen.

It is closer to eBay or Etsy than to Amazon. AliExpress provides the platform, the payment escrow and the dispute process; the sellers provide everything else. It is part of Alibaba Group, which also owns Alibaba.com (wholesale, business to business) and Cainiao, the logistics arm that carries most AliExpress parcels for the first leg of their journey.

How long does AliExpress take to ship?

Choice orders reach the US, UK and Western Europe in 5 to 10 days. Standard Shipping takes 15 to 30 days. The cheapest economy tiers can take 30 to 60 days, and express couriers like DHL or FedEx deliver in 3 to 9.

Shipping methodTypical timeWorth it when
AliExpress Choice5 to 10 daysAlmost always. Now the default on most US orders.
AliExpress Standard Shipping15 to 30 daysThe reliable middle option with full tracking.
Cainiao Super Economy30 to 55 daysOnly for cheap items you are in no hurry for.
DHL / FedEx / UPS3 to 9 daysHigher-value orders where the fee is proportionally small.

Two things worth knowing before you order. You cannot upgrade shipping after checkout, so choose at the point of buying. And peak periods — Chinese New Year, and the November sales — routinely add one to three weeks on every tier.

Once it ships, you can track the parcel across every carrier on the route, including the handoff to your national postal service, which is the part the AliExpress app tends to lose sight of.

What is actually worth buying on AliExpress?

Some categories are genuinely excellent value. Others are a false economy. Here is an honest split, with a shortcut into each one.

Watches

The strongest category on the platform. Mechanical and quartz watches from established microbrands at a fraction of Western retail. Stick to sellers with thousands of orders and buyer photos.

Phone accessories

Cases, cables, chargers, screen protectors, mounts. The classic AliExpress win: near-identical products to what a high-street shop sells at ten times the price.

Electronics & gadgets

Excellent for components, LED strips, small tools, hobby electronics and unbranded gadgets. Avoid branded memory cards and anything with a mains plug you cannot verify.

👗

Clothing

Good value if you read the size chart rather than trusting S/M/L, which run small by Western standards. Check the fabric composition in the specifications, not the description.

👟

Shoes

Order by the insole length in centimetres, which sellers almost always list, rather than by your usual size. Returns are impractical, so getting the measurement right matters more here than anywhere.

Jewellery

Strong for costume and fashion pieces, and for findings and beads if you make your own. Treat any claim of solid gold or silver at a low price with suspicion.

🏠

Home & decor

Storage, kitchen gadgets, lighting, wall art and small furnishings. Check the dimensions carefully — photographs routinely make items look considerably larger than they are.

Tools & DIY

Hand tools, measuring instruments, soldering gear and workshop consumables are consistently good value. Power tools are a gamble unless the seller is well established.

Beauty & accessories

Brushes, tools, nail supplies, hair accessories and storage are safe buys. Be cautious with anything applied to skin, where ingredients and shelf life cannot be verified.

What to avoid

Branded electronics and designer goods, where counterfeits dominate. Memory cards and SSDs, which are frequently relabelled at false capacities. And anything safety critical — helmets, car parts, baby equipment, mains electrical goods — where you cannot verify certification and the downside is not a wasted five pounds.

AliExpress deals and coupons

AliExpress runs a permanent stack of discounts, and most buyers use none of them. Four are worth knowing about.

Select coupons before checkout, not after. Store coupons and platform coupons stack with each other. They appear on the basket page, but only if you look for them.

New buyer prices. First-order discounts are steep and apply once per account.

The big sales. 11.11 in November and the Anniversary Sale in March are the genuine annual lows. The trade-off is that every parcel slows down for a fortnight afterwards.

Choice bundles. Combining several Choice items into one order frequently unlocks free shipping and a further discount.

Frequently asked questions

Is AliExpress legit?
Yes. AliExpress is a legitimate retail marketplace owned by Alibaba Group, one of the largest e-commerce companies in the world, and it has operated internationally since 2010. It is a marketplace rather than a shop, so quality depends on the individual seller, not on AliExpress itself.
Is AliExpress safe to buy from?
Payment is safe because AliExpress holds your money in escrow and does not release it to the seller until you confirm delivery or the buyer protection period ends. The real risk is not fraud but disappointment: an item that is smaller, thinner or lower quality than the photos suggested.

Do I have to pay customs on AliExpress orders?
It depends on your country and the value of the parcel. Many orders arrive with nothing to pay, but import VAT or duty can be charged above your national threshold, and the carrier may add a handling fee on top. Check your own customs authority for the current threshold.
What should I not buy on AliExpress?
Avoid branded electronics, memory cards, and anything safety critical such as helmets, car parts, electrical goods with mains plugs, or baby equipment. Counterfeits are common in branded categories and safety certification is difficult to verify.
How do I track an AliExpress order?
Copy the tracking number from My Orders, then View Detail, and paste it into a tracking tool that follows the parcel across every carrier on the route, including the handoff to your national postal service. Track your parcel here.
